Once a landfill site, the Mary Street Wetlands is located on approximately 1.7 hectares of land in East Devonport. In the past it was part of a stream flowing into the Mersey River.
Today it is an open water pond fed from an underground spring in addition to rain water and an enriched habitat for a diverse range of native flora and fauna.
Mary Street Wetlands contains 4 identified species of Tasmanian frogs including the Common Froglet, Brown Tree Frog, Marsh Frog and Banjo Frog. There are also a number of bird species to watch out for.
A unique environmental asset, this remnant urban wetland is an excellent example of successful partnerships between local government, schools and the community.
